Turner, tenor sax Oene Van Geel, viola Mark Helias, bass Emile Biayenda , drums
At the fall of 2003, Paris-based composer and pianist Delbecq has put together a new international quintet featuring American saxophonist Mark Turner and bassist Mark Helias, Dutch violist Oene van Geel and Franco-congolese drummer Emile Biayenda. Jazzier than Delbecq's solo and duo records, Phonetics continues the exploration of floating polyrhthmic time, shifting tonality, and unusual combinations of timbre that marked his previous quintet record on Songlines, Pursuit. But with a greater emphasis on solo statements, Phonetics ups the drive while maintaining its trancelike cool.
